The barbell front squat is a multi-joint exercise that strengthens the legs and builds muscle. “An added benefit of this exercise is building core strength, because of the upright position of the torso,” says Nicole, BodyBack’s head of mobile fitness trainers. By keeping the weight on the front of your body, you activate more muscle in your quads using less weight. Here’s how to do it and get toned!

  1. Stand tall in a shoulder-width stance with feet facing out. Rest the barbell on top of your chest. Use an overhand grip to securely hold the bar with your fingers. Triceps will remain parallel to the floor to support the weight of the bar.
  2. Slowly drop your hips until your thighs become parallel to the floor. Pause at the bottom of the squat, and then move back to the starting position.
